Brief: Researched and write a 4 page essay about a typographer or graphic designer. Using the contents of the essay, and images of the designer's work, produce an accordion-fold book.
Page size: 5 3/4 by 8 1/4 inches (14.6 by 20.9 centimeters)
Typefaces used: Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk
Class: Graphic Design Studio 2 (ArtGR 271)
Instructor: Paul Bruski
Brief: Read Shakespeare's sonnets. Develop a book around 16 of the sonnets. Choose a theme, and choose sonnets that fit the theme. Any layout can be used, but the line structure of the sonnets must be maintained.
I produced my book around identity theory and the (often dubious) research that suggests that Shakespeare, if he did in fact exist, didn't write any of the work attributed to him.
Sonnets that reference identity (of the author or of the subject) were chosen, and arranged in non-traditional layouts. Additional text that references questions of identity and identity theory is paired with each sonnet.
The folio case is closed with magnets and a small clasp. The scraps of paper that make up the collage are taken from an old dictionary (circled text are words that reference the theme of the book in various ways), and images of Shakespeare and his alleged ghost writer (according to some) Francis Bacon.
Folio Dimensions (closed): 10 by 15 by 3/4 inches (25.4 by 38.1 by 1.9 centimeters)
Page Dimensions: 8 by 13 inches (20.3 by 33 centimeters)
Paper: cream coloured, linen textured resumé paper
Typefaces: Univers, Adobe Caslon Pro, Adobe Garamond Pro, Akzidenz Grotesk, Breitkopf Fraktur, Candara, Courier New, Courtrai, Drinking, Edwardian Script ITC, Ehmcke Schwabacher Initialen, Fell French Canon, Fontin, Futura, Grablau Web, Gutenbergs Ghostypes, Helvetica Neue, Leicester, Museo 700, Museo Sans 500, Neptun, Sovereign, Typographer Rotunda, Wieynk Fraktur Initialen
Class: ArtGR 475 (Advanced Typography)
Instructor: Paula Curran
Selected pages shown. Single edition, though I have plans to revisit the project and revise it, again producing a single book.
Brief: Take images and text provided by Meredith Publishing that go with one of three Meredith magazines. Editing the images, and adding filler text where needed, design a cover, table of contents page, and three spreads. Treat it as a total redesign of the appropriate magazine, including renaming. This project also serves as an introduction to Adobe's InDesign software.
Typefaces: Arno Pro and Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk
